A strong marketing plan is the key to a successful referral program. You need to promote your program at the right time and place to make it scale. In this guide, you will find recommendations for exactly when and where to promote referrals both generally speaking and by vertical.

Onsite Marketing

Post Purchase Overlay

Take advantage of the moment of delight your customer experiences just after they've made a purchase by marketing the program after checkout. We recommend an auto-pop; however, a static CTA on this page is a great alternative. Some clients choose to do both!

Mobile Menu

The menu in your site is a high-visibility placement frequently used to promote Refer A Friend programs. By simply tapping on the "Refer a friend" or "Get $20 off" CTA in your menu, advocates will instantly be taken to the share experience, where they can choose from a variety of native share channels to spread the word to their friends.

Floating Overlay

The floating overlay is a top performing CTA because it's visible across the entire site. If your team is concerned about it interfering with other overlays, consider combining them into a carousel or adjusting the Extole overlay to only fire on repeat visits. The example below shows both the minimized and expanded view of the Overlay as a customer would see it on your website.

My Account

Your customers may expect to have this type of program always available in their My Account center. Add a tag or link to ensure the program is easy to find.

Global Header & Footer

At the bare minimum, your program should be marketed in the global header and footer of your website. For the header, this could mean a permanent placement in your global menu. For the footer, this typically means a link or tile.

In App Marketing

Menu and Banner

In app customers tend to have higher rates of sharing and engagement overall, so it's important to make sure that the program is visible there. Top performing app placements include the menu, in app banners and interstitials.

Outbound Marketing

Dedicated

Engage your customer base with dedicated monthly emails promoting the referral program. Dedicated emails generally have the highest share rate of any CTA type.

SMS & Push Notifications

Get right in front of your customers with SMS and push notification marketing of the campaign. These initiate immediate and easy sharing. Once they get their share link they can easily text, or show their QR code to friends and family.


Mail after Purchase Email

Capitalize again on that moment of delight by sending new customers an email promoting the referral program. Keep this within 3 days of purchase for maximum engagement.

Offline Marketing

Your offline audience can refer too! Use mailers with QR codes to drive these customers back to your site to refer a friend (and make another purchase).
