# Top Extole Programs for Credit Unions & Banks

> The program path for a credit union or bank: Refer a Friend, then Welcome Offer, then Ambassador and employee programs, with Offer programs running alongside to keep members engaged.

## Your Members Already Trust Each Other More Than They Trust Ads

Credit unions and banks have an advantage most brands would kill for: your members already talk to each other about money, and they trust each other's opinions far more than they trust marketing. A member who was referred by another member sticks around longer, earns you more, and is worth more over the life of the relationship than one who found you through a paid channel — and once someone becomes an active advocate, they're dramatically less likely to leave in the first place.

Most CUs and banks start by capturing a sliver of that trust with a single Refer a Friend program and stop there. The path below is what it looks like to capture more of it — a natural progression from Refer a Friend, to Welcome Offer, to Ambassador and employee programs, with Offer programs running alongside the whole thing to keep members engaged in between. Each stage builds on the credibility and infrastructure of the one before it, so by the time you're running all of them, growth isn't coming from one channel anymore — it's coming from your entire membership base and staff, all pointed the same direction.

## Stage 1: Refer a Friend — The Foundation

If you're a CU or bank, you probably already run this one — Refer a Friend (Extole's [Refer a Member](/product/product-overview/programs/refer-a-friend/refer-a-member) flow) is the standard starting point, built around the member lifecycle you already track: account opened, direct deposit, debit card used, account qualified.

What's great is that the events you're already sending Extole for referral — account opened, direct deposit, debit card used, account qualified — are the exact same type of events Welcome Offer and Offer programs key off. That means adding one of them later isn't a new integration project; it's a new campaign built on data that's already flowing, configured in Flow Builder rather than engineered from scratch.

## Stage 2: Welcome Offer — Acquisition for People Who Aren't in Your Referral Network Yet

Refer a Friend only reaches people connected to an existing member. [Welcome Offer for Credit Unions and Banks](/product/product-overview/programs/welcome-offer/welcome-offer-for-credit-unions) reaches everyone else — someone who found you through a Google search, an ad, or walked into a branch with no referral link in hand. It rewards a new member for opening an account and completing qualifying actions (typically account opening, direct deposit, and debit card usage) within a set window, usually 90 days, with no promo code required.

3Rivers runs Welcome Offer alongside its referral program specifically because Extole could support both from one platform — it's the same tagging, the same reward infrastructure, the same CSM relationship, pointed at a different audience.

**Example: Use it to launch a new branch.** Because Welcome Offer needs no referral link and no existing member relationship, it's a natural fit for a grand opening: promote it in local ads, in-branch signage, and opening-day events to drive immediate foot traffic to a location that has no word-of-mouth yet. It's also the go-to play for slow acquisition periods or for pushing adoption of a specific product — a member opens a checking account today because there's a reason to do it today, not eventually.

One practical note: the fastest way to launch a Welcome Offer is to mirror the requirements of your existing referral program. If the qualifying actions are the same, there's no additional technical lift — you're reusing infrastructure you already have.

## Stage 3: Employees, Ambassadors, and Partners — Putting Your Best Advocates and Your Staff on the Same Team

Once Refer a Friend and Welcome Offer are running, the next stage isn't a bigger reward — it's a bigger set of advocates. Two groups matter most for a CU or bank: your most engaged members, and the staff who talk to members face-to-face every day.

**[Employee referral programs](/product/product-overview/programs/refer-a-friend/employee-referral-program)** turn tellers, loan officers, and branch staff into a referral channel in their own right, which matters most where personal relationships already drive account openings. One credit union runs employee-to-member referrals through physical referral cards with personalized QR codes, so a staff member handing someone a card in a branch and a member sharing a digital link both feed the same program.

**[Ambassador](/product/product-overview/programs/influencer) or partner programs** give a smaller invited group an exclusive offer — a portal, recognition, and often better rewards than the general referral program. This can be your community partners or student ambassadors.

**[Go Extole](/product/product-overview/programs/refer-a-friend/go-extole)**, Extole's mobile app for field and branch teams, is what makes the employee side scale. Staff can share a QR code or a personalized link on the spot and track their own referral activity from share to signup to install — no print handouts, no waiting for a desktop. For a CU or bank with real branch traffic, this is often the highest-converting channel you have, because it captures the in-person moment a purely digital program misses entirely.

## The Always-On Layer: Offer / Reward for Action

Refer a Friend, Welcome Offer, and Ambassador/employee programs are all acquisition-shaped — they bring people in. [Offer programs](/product/product-overview/programs/offer/index) (also called Reward for Action) run alongside all three, rewarding existing members for specific actions that make them more valuable and more likely to stay. For a CU or bank, three actions consistently pay off:

* **Downloading the mobile app.** A member on the app checks their balance more, uses more features, and is harder for a competitor to poach. An Offer program that rewards the download and first login turns app adoption from a hope into a tracked, incentivized outcome.
* **Funding a non-funded account.** Every CU has accounts that were opened and never funded — free to open, easy to forget. A targeted Offer program to that exact audience ("add \$X and get \$Y") converts a stalled account into an active one without touching your broader marketing budget.
* **Switching to e-statements.** It's a small ask with a real payoff — lower operating cost per member and a cleaner communication channel — and members respond well to a modest reward for a one-click change.

What makes these worth running isn't any one of them alone; it's that they keep the relationship active in the gaps between the bigger acquisition moments, using the same platform, the same reward infrastructure, and the same reporting you already have from the programs above.

## The Full Picture

| Stage | Program | What it captures | Why it matters |
| :- | :- | :- | :- |
| 1 | Refer a Friend / Refer a Member | Members you already have, turned into an acquisition channel | Most CUs already run this — it's the infrastructure every other stage builds on |
| 2 | Welcome Offer | New members with no referral link — search, ads, walk-ins, new branches | Reaches people referral can't: search, ads, walk-ins, new branches |
| 3 | Ambassador, Employee, Go Extole | Top members and branch staff, turned into a mobile-enabled advocacy force | One credit union runs employee-to-member referrals via QR-coded referral cards |
| Always-on | Offer / Reward for Action | Existing members, nudged toward app adoption, funded accounts, e-statements | Keeps members engaged in the gaps between the bigger acquisition moments |

None of these stages requires ripping out the one before it — each one adds a channel without touching the others, and every one of them runs on the platform you're already paying for. The credit unions and banks getting the most out of Extole aren't the ones with the biggest referral reward; they're the ones running two or three of these at once. If you're only on Stage 1 today, the next conversation with your CSM is about which stage to add next — not whether to.
